The Kristin O. Lauer Fund for English Majors
Reading and Writing for Life
In her 42 years of teaching at Fordham, Professor Kristin Lauer fostered the varied aspirations of her legions of devoted students, from dancers to those in law and law enforcement, from social workers to professional writers, by sharing her passionate belief in the great usefulness to life of writing well and studying the examples of great writers. The Kristin O. Lauer Fund for English Majors supports activities that enrich the classroom experience. Students fondly remember the special time they spend with faculty member outside the classroom, attending plays and films, concerts and dance, outside lectures and social events. The Lauer Fund will make these experiences available to current—and future—English majors. Honoring Kris’s inspiring legacy, this scholarship looks to the future by recognizing and supporting students who see the English major as integral to a directed and meaningful life.

Thank you for your past support of The Kristin O. Lauer Fund for English Majors!
I am writing with a follow-up about the fund to which you so generously donated. Led by Kate Whitney FCLC ’79, former students of Professor Lauer launched the fund as a scholarship. On reflection, we realized that in order to honor Professor Lauer’s legacy more faithfully, the fund should inspire instructors to follow her example. Those of you who studied with Professor Lauer will recall that she made film, theater, and other outside activities integral to the way she taught literature and writing.
Consequently, the fund has changed direction with the enthusiastic support of Professor Lauer herself.
We are thrilled to report that we have raised $180,000 of the $250,000 we need to make this an endowed (and therefore permanent) fund that will play a role in every future English major’s experience. Your contribution is an essential part of the fund, and we hope that you will agree with our change of direction.
We would be very grateful for any further assistance you can give us.
Today is Fordham Giving Day, a push for philanthropy for the University. Won’t you please help support this fund once again? All gifts made to this campaign will be matched, $2-for-$1!
Thank you!
