The most impactful experience of my Fordham education was participating in a Global outreach project. Global outreach challenges Fordham students to use their Jesuit education and apply it to hands-on community engagement. Through direct engagement with a Global Outreach community partner, we have the opportunity to grapple with community injustice and learn how social justice, solidarity, and even spirituality play a role in understanding what it means to be men and women for others. By immersing ourselves in global communities, we are taken out of our comfort zones and foster awareness of the world and our place in it. Global Outreach values community engagement and nurtures developing leaders who want to work for justice and continue educating themselves beyond the classroom.
In June 2023, a team of Fordham students and a Fordham faculty member will travel to the El Paso-Ciudad Juarez, Mexico border. The partner organization that we will be working with is the Encuentro Project. We will have the opportunity to deeply engage with the partner and each other about forced migration and asylum seeking. We will be educating ourselves on the experiences of the community, giving us the chance to take ourselves out of our comfort zone and discovering a newfound compassion for migrants and refugees and desire for social justice.
